Bob Waterman Presents at 17th Annual Dillon Inn of Court on the Complexities of the 1993 Chemplex Trial

Robert Bob Waterman Attorney At LawAt last night’s 17th annual Dillon Inn of Court’s featured program of the year, the audience of lawyers and judges learned about the “Complexities of Chemplex — A Study of Complex Litigation Issues of First Impression and Practicalities of Case Management.” This topic focused on an environmental insurance coverage trial that took place in Clinton, Iowa during most of the Summer of 1993. Presenters were Justice Tom Waterman, Judge John Telleen, and Bob Waterman, all of whom participated in the trial as attorneys from Lane & Waterman, and former Chief Judge John Nahra, who presided at trial. This large complex litigation included 1,200 boxes of documents generated in discovery and for trial, 300 pre-trial  depositions, 47 attorneys of record who appeared for 12 different parties, with six parties remaining at trial, seven weeks of trial evidence, three days of closing arguments, and 11 days of jury deliberations. The Iowa Supreme Court ultimately reversed a multi-million dollar verdict and entered judgment in favor of all insurers, including Lane & Waterman’s client, finding notice by Chemplex was late and prejudicial. Fireman’s Fund Ins. Co.v. ACC Chemical Co. 538 N.W.2d 259 (Iowa  1995). See link for the PowerPoint Bob Waterman used with his remarks.
