Van Vooren and Kay-Decker Present for Iowa State Bar Association
Courtney, the leadoff speaker, presented “Wayfair, Cyber Hygiene, and Interacting with Taxing Authorities.” Courtney shared tips drawn from her experience as the Director of the Iowa Department of Revenue. The first half of her presentation included discussion of the South Dakota v. Wayfair case, which found that states can require remote sellers to collect sales tax without physical presence. During the second half, she encouraged attendees to focus on their cyber hygiene by implementing daily routines designed to prevent cybersecurity compromises. At Lane & Waterman, her areas of practice include tax and administrative matters. Her unique experiences in identity theft tax fraud prevention allow her to share cyber hygiene advice like that shared in Friday’s CLE.
Scott presented “Limitations of Liability Primer,” where he reminded everyone that liability provisions are not just boilerplate and require significant thought tailored to each transaction. Scott’s practice focuses on transactional and business matters, including mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, corporate limited liability and governance transactions, and general corporate and contractual matters.
