Associates

Lane & Waterman emphasizes academic achievement, integrity and excellent people skills when hiring associates. Many of our attorneys either participated on law reviews in law school or clerked with the judiciary. Exceptional people skills allow our attorneys to understand and effectively work with our clients and others. Even though members of our firm are enthusiastic and committed to their work, we also understand that this doesn't have to come at the expense of a full and varied life outside of work. The Quad Cities offers numerous cultural and recreational activities, easy access to Chicago, affordable housing and great neighborhoods for families.

Lane & Waterman recruits associates with outstanding qualities that will enhance their opportunities of becoming partners. Lane & Waterman carefully considers associates whose skills ensure a fit within the community-focused working environment and the potential to become partners of the firm. Lane & Waterman associates receive regular evaluations to continue their ongoing practice development. In addition, partners provide continuing formal and informal training.

Lane & Waterman's approach to associate development begins with the idea that exposing associates to a variety of work helps them determine their practice focus. Our associates immediately experience a broad range of assignments including research and writing projects, briefs, client letters and conferences, negotiations, court appearances, depositions and closings to help them define their areas of practice expertise. We have a sophisticated, metropolitan practice. For example, in 2005 we represented the buyer of a NYSE media company in a transaction valued at $1.46 billion and played a major role in prosecuting and settling a class action resulting in payment to policy holders of a minimum of $100 million. Associates also have opportunities to work on more complex litigation and transactions with the guidance of partners. Our litigation department tries cases frequently. Our associates who want trial experience are exposed to the courtroom at an early point in their careers.

Open communication between partners and associates enhances the positive setting at Lane & Waterman, and allows associates to progress, taking on greater responsibilities.

In addition, associate training opportunities are abundant at Lane & Waterman, including paying for associates' attendance at continuing education seminars held throughout the Midwest. Consideration for partnership starts a relatively short 5-1/2 years after associates begin their careers at Lane & Waterman.

To further support our associates, Lane & Waterman continually invests in technologies that deliver the most advanced document and research systems and other communication resources.
